The Nightmare That Is Public Education
Product Information THE NIGHTMARE THAT IS PUBLIC EDUCATION (Includes FREE bookmark!) (An Exposé of What Really Happens in Public Schools) By Renato C. Nicolai, Ed.D. Reality: Public education is a nightmare! Incompetence and mediocrity haunt public middle schools, junior high schools, and high schools. Teachers waste valuable classroom instructional time every day, and their teaching methods are grossly ineffective. Knowledge of subject matter is alarmingly inadequate. Parents don’t really know what happens in public school classrooms. They have been hoodwinked by educators to believe that their children are receiving a good education, but they are not, as substantiated by national and international assessments. Content: The Nightmare That Is Public Education proves this reality with real classroom examples, lived public school experiences, and the revelation of what public education is really like, based upon the author’s thirty-eight year career in public education. Dr. Nicolai writes about every aspect of this scary reality by sharing his personal experiences about the following: • The inferior quality of public school teaching and teachers • The ineffective management of student discipline • The dreadful physical condition of many classrooms • The lack of knowing how to teach standards • The abominable waste of instructional time • The substitute teaching charade and disgrace • The culture of permissiveness, reticence, and mediocrity • The deception of “Teacher In-Service Days,” “Professionalism,” “Teacher Evaluations,” and “Computer Assisted Instruction.” Although the title of his book is rather negative and includes the bad news of how broken our public schools are, let me assure you that every chapter is filled with positive suggestions, ideas, strategies, lists, questions, charts, methods, and recommendations about how to improve the system. Believe me, every teacher, teacher candidate, parent, and school administrator should read this book because it is brimming with essential advice and invaluable tips from an educator who knows what works and how children learn effectively. Frequently Asked Questions: 1. What motivated you to write this book? After I retired, I believed that I had a responsibility to let parents know what really goes on inside the schools and classrooms their children attend. I also wanted to motivate teachers to improve their teaching performance so students could learn to their potential. 2. Why did you use the word “nightmare” in your title? A nightmare is a terrifying or very unpleasant experience and so are many schools. Weekly the newspaper, Internet, and TV are filled with stories about sexual assaults by teachers, drugs on school grounds, gang violence, shootings, low test scores, dropouts, and so on . . . 3. What did you hope to accomplish by writing your book? My sincere and honest hope is that teachers, principals, and other educators will come to their senses and see the glaringly obvious reasons why public schools are failing so miserably and make the changes needed to improve them. 4. Why do you blame teachers so severely for the problems in public schools? I intentionally pointed a finger at classroom teachers because they hold the hope and power of making the most significant difference in improving our schools. Sixty years of reforms (commissions, curriculum changes, government programs, testing mandates, etc…) have resulted in flat achievement levels and approximately 500,000 high school dropouts each year. Teachers interact with students every day, teaching subject matter, motivating young minds, and giving example. Teachers hold the answer to improving public schools, but they must learn how to teach better and make the necessary changes in their methods and attitudes to help young people learn to their potential. Other than the learner, the teacher is the most important person in the educational process, and, therefore, must perform at the highest possible level of competency, integrity, and professionalism if schools are to improve. Unfortunately, many teachers don’t! 5. Are you bitter toward public education? Absolutely not! My book is not a vengeance-seeking, bitter diatribe written by a resentful educator. No! I wrote this book to encourage teachers and the education systems they work for to improve their performance so they can help young people learn better than they are now.
